Diabetes Mellitus

If secondary conditions are present (heart conditions, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy or other eye conditions, skin conditions, decreased kidney functioning, etc.) another compensation and pension exam must be completed for these conditions. They will be rated separately as a secondary condition, not as diabetes.

Symptoms
Manageable by restricted diet only
Requires one or more daily injection of insulin and restricted diet
Oral hypoglycemic agent and restricted diet needed
Requires one or more daily injection of insulin, a restricted diet, and regulation of activities
Requires one or more daily injection of insulin, a restricted diet, regulation of activities, episodes of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic reactions requiring one or two hospitalizations per year or twice a month visits to a diabetic care provider, and complications that would not be compensable if separately evaluated
Requires more than one daily injection of insulin, a restricted diet, regulation of activities (avoidance of strenuous and recreational activities), episodes of ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic reactions requiring at least three hospitalizations per year or weekly visits to a diabetic care provider, and progressive loss of weight and strength or complications that would be compensable if separately evaluated
